You parked at the far end of the lot and still came back to a ding in the driver's door. Maybe it was the car next to you, maybe a shopping cart rolled into it, or maybe a gust of wind caught somebody's door. However it got there, the question is usually the same: can it be fixed without having to repaint the door?
Most of the time, yes. A typical door ding is small, shallow, and hasn't broken the paint, which makes it one of the best candidates for paintless dent repair. There are a few exceptions, though, and where the ding sits on the door matters more than most people expect.
Paintless dent repair works by slowly moving the dented metal back into shape so the original paint stays on the car. Door dings tend to be a great match because the damage is usually limited to a small spot, and the impact wasn't hard enough to crack the finish. That's the kind of damage our minor ding repair service is built around.
That said, "small" doesn't automatically mean "easy." A shallow, round ding in the middle of the door is about as straightforward as it gets. A ding the same size sitting on a body line or right at the edge of the door can take a lot more time and care, and occasionally it isn't a good fit for PDR at all.
The flat, open part of the door is where PDR works best. There's usually room to get tools behind the panel, and the metal responds well when it's worked slowly. Most parking lot dings land somewhere in this area.
Body lines are the creases stamped into the door that give it its shape. They also make the metal stiffer, which means a ding that crosses one takes more precision to repair. The technician has to restore the dent and the sharp line running through it, so the reflection looks right from every angle. It's usually doable, but expect it to take longer than a ding on a flat spot.
This is the spot that surprises people. The very edge of the door, especially near the hinge or latch, is made of folded, double-layered metal. It's much stiffer than the rest of the door, and there's very little room behind it. Door edges also take a lot of hits from other doors, so the paint there is more likely to be chipped. Some edge dings can still be improved with PDR, but this is where a technician is most likely to recommend a different approach.
Since most PDR work happens from behind the panel, the first job is finding a way in. Doors actually give us a few options. Depending on the vehicle and where the ding is, we may be able to reach it through the window opening or a factory access hole inside the door. For other dings, we'll carefully remove the interior door panel.
If there's no practical way to get behind the ding, we may be able to use glue pulling. With this method, we attach a tab to the outside of the dent and pull the metal out from the front. Whether that's a good option depends on the paint condition and the location of the damage. If the impact cracked or chipped the paint, moving the metal can cause more paint to flake off, so that spot will likely need some refinishing. PDR can still help in some cases by getting the metal close to its original shape first, which cuts down on how much filler the body shop has to use.
A hard hit can also stretch the metal or leave a crease so sharp that it won't fully return to its original shape. Panels that have been repaired or repainted before need a closer look, too, since filler and aftermarket paint don't react the same way factory paint does. A single door ding in an easy spot is often a same-day repair, and small dings can sometimes be fixed while you wait. Dings on body lines or door edges take longer. So do repairs where the door panel has to come off. We'll give you a realistic timeframe once we've seen the damage.
We can't quote a price without seeing the ding. Here's what goes into the estimate, though. The biggest factors are how deep the ding is, whether it crosses a body line or sits on the edge, and how much work it takes to reach it. The number of dings matters too, along with whether the door is steel or aluminum.
Many drivers pay for door ding repair out of pocket, since the cost of fixing a single ding is often less than their deductible. Most cars that have been parked in busy lots for a few years have collected more than one ding. It usually makes sense to fix them all in the same visit rather than coming back each time. Just point out every ding you've noticed, and we'll check the rest of the car under our inspection lights for any you might have missed. A door ding doesn't affect how your car drives, so it's easy to put off. But dings add up. They can bring down your trade-in value and lead to charges when you turn in a leased vehicle. And if the paint is chipped, the exposed metal underneath can start to rust over time. Fixing a ding while the paint is still intact is also what keeps PDR on the table, so it's worth having it looked at sooner rather than later.
Skip the plungers, suction cups, and hair dryer tricks you've seen online. We regularly see dings that got worse after a DIY attempt. Stretched metal or cracked paint can turn a quick PDR job into a bodywork job. If you can, give the car a quick wash before your appointment, since dirt makes small dings harder to see. You can't prevent every ding, but you can improve your odds. Parking at the end of a row, next to a curb or island, cuts the number of doors that can reach you in half. Avoid parking next to cars with a lot of dents, and be extra careful on windy days, when doors are more likely to swing open hard. If it's just a surface scuff, it can often be polished out after the dent is repaired. If the scratch goes through the paint, that area will likely need touch-up or refinishing along with the dent repair.
